Do your academic staff meet the standard?

The current Higher Education Standards Framework (HESF2015) requires all HE academic staff to meet three requirements:

  1. Knowledge of their discipline informed by continuing scholarship;
  2. Skills in contemporary teaching, learning and assessment principles; and
  3. A qualification in a relevant discipline at least one level higher than the course they are teaching.

These requirements are quite specific and from what I have observed across the tertiary education sector, many academic staff currently working in independent HEPs may not comprehensively meet all three.

In response to this regulatory imperative for appropriately qualified and skilled academic staff, Higher Education Leadership Institute (HELI) has recently released its accredited Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Academic Practice especially for the independent higher education sector.

This course is specifically designed for academic staff seeking to undertake further professional development in the areas of HE learning and teaching; curriculum and assessment design; continuing scholarship and online academic practice.

Professional development in these four areas will not only enhance the academic practice of individual staff but also the overall quality, scholarship and regulatory compliance of any tertiary institution.

This course is also relevant for RTOs that are seeking to transition to the HE sector by ensuring that their staff are appropriately qualified and will meet the standards upon application.

Our next course intake commences on 16th July 2018 and we encourage your institution to nominate one or more of your academic staff to undertake the course.
